A Guide To Buying Aromatherapy Essential Oils

The market for aromatherapy products is huge, and, like most other goods, there's lots of counterfeit items about, so it is sensible to be extremely careful when you are considering a purchase. So, exercise caution before reaching for your wallet.

Before you buy aromatherapy essential oils, you need to ask yourself just why you're buying them. Perhaps it's a candle, a healing liquid or for a massage oil to treat your aching knees, or perhaps for another complaint.

Next, you need to know which essential oils to buy if they are to be blended together. If you're going to use it as massage oil, you need to be sure of which ones to buy. Read up all you can about it or meet a practitioner before investing money in this.

Lastly, please realize that these oils are not made all alike. They vary in origin, method of production, ingredients and purity. So, bear in mind all the above factors before buying your bottles.

Where to buy essential oils from?

Aromatherapy oils can be bought from just about anywhere- dedicated aromatherapy stores, health food shops, herb shops, cosmetic shops, open-air markets, drug stores, supermarkets and online stores.

If you want them as therapeutic essential oils, go to herb stores and health food shops where they are knowledgeable about giving you what you need, rather than go to general supermarkets where you may not get the right thing for your specific requirements. You can also buy them locally in neighborhood health food stores, though they may not have a wide range.

If this is not enough for you and you want a wider canvas to choose from, do you know where to buy them from? Well, you can buy from Internet stores such as MotherNature.com, Essential7, Naturalfragrances.net, 100puresessentialoils.com, quinessence.com, Ebay and Amazon.

Lastly, you can also buy from well-established mail order companies that can send them on to you at a lower cost than any health food store.

This should take away all the confusion in your mind about where to buy essential oils.

Tips for first-time buyers: By now, you know exactly from where to buy, but do you know what to look out for before you buy these oils? Here are some tips:

• Ensure that the essential oils you're buying are sold in traditional glass bottles with a dark amber color that blocks light. Plastic bottles dissolve, get tainted and become weak and impure, so they don't serve the purpose.

• Do you find "100% Essential Oil" or "Pure Essential Oil" on the label of the bottle you're looking at? If yes, buy it.

• To check the purity of these oils, take a break for a few minutes so that your nose is clear of earlier fragrances. When you sniff an essential oil, keep your nose at a safe distance from the bottle or the fragrance might just hit your nostrils and make you dizzy.

• If a bottle looks dated or dusty, set it aside because old products have very low healing abilities as they age with time.

Aromatherapy: Yes It Can Be As Simple As Lighting a Candle

If you are a newcomer to aromatherapy and have searched the web for information, it can seem a daunting task to find a simplified breakdown of what aromatherapy really is. A search of aromatherapy books will produce millions of results. So how does one make sense of the plethora of information available?

First, let's start with the definition of the word aromatherapy. According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, the broad definition is: the use of aroma to enhance the feeling of well-being. This definition seems so simple and straight forward. Yet for a word so simply defined there is such an abundance of information available on the subject. On Amazon.com alone, a search in books for aromatherapy returns 2,264 results. Why all this amazing information on a subject with such a simple definition? Whereas the definition of aromatherapy appears to be very simple, aromatherapy use and practice varies greatly and can become the subject of great debate.

There are professionals who practice aromatherapy. They are called aromatherapists. There are professional holistic medicine practitioners who suggest aromatherapy to their patients. Then there is an individual at home who lights their favorite fragrant candle and sits back to enjoy. Is this practicing aromatherapy? To many professionals and holistic medicine aficionado's the answer is no. And so the debate begins.

Going back to the Merriam-Webster's broad definition, the use of aroma to enhance the feeling of well-being, why then would burning a candle not be considered practicing aromatherapy? No one can dispute that the aroma of coffee brewing in the morning gives some people the feeling of "I can face this day" energy. No one can dispute that the aroma of bread baking in the oven gives some the people the "Oh, it is good to be home" relaxed feeling. These are examples of aromas enhancing a person's feeling of well-being. One could then conclude that there is no difference between that brewed coffee and an aromatic citrus sage candle filling a room with a soothing aroma that provides a sense of well-being.

A person can fully embrace the belief that aromatherapists and holistic practitioners are an important and integral part in helping to attain the greatest benefit from the therapeutic properties of aromatherapy and still believe that the simplicity of burning a candle or soaking in a warm tub with aromatic oils added to the water can also be beneficial.

The debate will continue, but that is no reason stop soaking in a tub, warming diffuser blend oils in a burner or lighting a candle to enhance your feeling of well-being.

Aromatherapy - Grief And Healing The Heart

The healing journey is a very personal process for each of us.

When do we grieve?

When someone close to us dies or someone close gets sick, leaves home, moves far away and more.

There are 4 areas in which the grief process shows itself

1. Feelings- sadness, anxiety, misery, heartache, blame, hurt, frantic, rage, fear, guilt regret, anger.

2. Thoughts- going over and over the past, going through the what if's and if only.

3. Behaviour- yelling for no apparent reason, bursting into tears, talking to self as if the person is there, wear the lost persons clothes or jewellery

4. Physical symptoms- loss of appetite, lethargy, restlessness, sleeping too much, breathlessness, waking through the night or very early, hair loss.

How can we help!

One of the most important things we can do for people who are grieving is to give them a safe place in which to experience and express their pain. It very is important for the person grieving to be able to express their feelings and talk about their loss or traumatic experience. This helps one to feel supported and know that they are not alone, and that they are being heard. Comfort is so important for the grieving person.

Comfort is to soothe in times of distress or sorrow.

Take a moment to think about what essential oils can support you.

What essential oils bring a smile to your face, uplift your emotions and remind you of happy times. Remember essential oils are sourced from an abundant array of flowers, leaves, bark, woods, herbs, spices, fruit and more. They offer their own insights, transitions and healing. As we make our way through different journeys in life these wonderful beauties from nature subtly integrate any changes taking place.

Self care is never a selfish act. It is simply good stewardship of the only gift I have. The gift I was put on Earth to offer to others. Anytime we can listen to our true self, and give it the care it requires. We do not only for ourselves, but also for the many others whose lives we touch.

~Parker Palmer

Here are some suggestions of ways in which you can soothe your emotions, being mindful of the moment.

Sit and be quite breathing slowly and deeply

Have Aromatique Baths while playing some music that you enjoy listening to.

Use your Aromatherapy burners, room or body sprays, remember to choose oils that remind you of happy times and uplift your emotions, giving you courage and support

Take time out for you and your friends

Exercise daily, take walks on the beach or woodlands, hug a tree

Write yourself some positive affirmations

Thomas Moore once said ~ The ordinary acts we practice every day at home are of more importance to the soul than their simplicity might suggest.

Reducing Anxiety And Stress With Aromatherapy

The 21st century American society has seen a continual rise in the number of adults suffering anxiety disorders. According to the Anxiety Disorders Association of American (ADAA):

Anxiety disorders affect 40 million adults age 18 or older (18% of the US population)

Anxiety disorders cost the U.S. more than $42 billion annually

More than $22.84 billion of these costs are associated with repeated use of health care services by people seeking relief for symptoms that mimic physical illnesses

Nearly one-half of people diagnosed with anxiety disorder are also diagnosed with depression

Although there are multiple uncontrollable risk factors for anxiety disorders such as genetics, brain chemistry and personality, one risk factor that is controllable is life style. Enter aromatherapy.

Aromatherapy is a simple yet inexpensive way to change your life style, and many anxiety, depression and stress related ailments can be significantly improved with the use of aromatherapy. Additionally, with all the side effects associated with medications being prescribed for anxiety, depression and stress people are looking for safe, non-toxic ways to treat these conditions. Although individuals should never diagnose or treat themselves, used in combination with a doctor's advice and medications if needed, aromatherapy does provide a safe, non-toxic alternative to traditional treatments.

There are three basic forms of aromatherapy:
1) fragrance diffusion such as candle burning,
2) topical application such as bath products or oils used in massages and
3) inhalation therapy such as nasal inhalers.

Each form of aromatherapy has its own benefits and there are no set rules to apply for determining which form is best for you. The choice is purely personal preference. Do you prefer going to a spa? Do you prefer relaxing in a hot soaking tub in the privacy of your home? Do you prefer infusing a room with your favorite fragrance either by burning a candle or heating essential oils in an oil warmer?

Before choosing an aromatherapy form and a particular fragrance, the only health consideration is possible allergies to the plant from which essential oils are derived. For example, you may enjoy the lavender fragrance of a burning candle, but lavender massage oils may cause skin irritation.

Once you have determined the form of aromatherapy you prefer, the next step is to choose the fragrance that will provide the most benefit for the treatment you are seeking. There is an amazing amount of information available on the essential oils derived from various plants and herbs and the benefits derived from each. The book I would most recommend is "The Aromatherapy Bible" by Gill Farrer-Halls.

If you make the decision today to give aromatherapy a try, do not create another stressful situation for yourself by worrying how to, where, when. You can start out simply by buying candles (lavender is known for its soothing and calming effects). Or you can sprinkle bath salts into you tub and soak for a half hour. The point is, that simple steps can be taken to make significant improvements in helping a person ease some of their anxiety, stress or depression related symptoms such as lethargy, headaches, and insomnia.

Relaxing Essential Oils Used In Aromatherapy

Explore the world of aromatherapy and find your innermost self. Check out the thousands of aromatherapy recipes and blends to find which ones suit you, your needs and work best for you.

You can use the power of aromatherapy in a number of different ways. You can massage the oils into your skin. People find inhaling the soothing aromas by either burning candles or using a diffuser helps to change their mood and relax.

If you like the thought of a massage, you will need to add the essential oils to a carrier or base oil. Each carrier oil has its own unique properties and tends to be used for different skin types and conditions. If you have sensitive skin, or are prone to acne, using a gentle oil such as Grapeseed oil is good for your condition. If you have a more challenging skin condition such as eczema, using Almond, Evening Primrose, Olive or Jojoba oils would be a better choice. If you have scars using Calendula oil is great, while Comfrey or Rosemary oils are good for stings, burns cuts and grazes.

For a full body massage you will need about 1-2 ounces of carrier oil. The recommended measure of essential oil is 1-2 drops per teaspoon of carrier oil; using any more than this or using it neat can burn your skin.

There are many recipes for you to discover, deciding what results you want to achieve and how you want to achieve them is the key to selecting the right recipe for you. Most recipes can be used either in the bath, in a diffuser or for a massage, whichever is your preference. If you stick to the general methods for mixing your oils, then you'll be OK and you'll achieve the results you're aiming for.

For the bath:

Use 2 ounces carrier oil to 15-20 drops essential oils. Mix the oils together and store in an amber coloured bottle (to minimise the evaporation of the essential oils and to stop the oils degrading over time).

For a massage:

Use 1 ounce of carrier oil mixed with 8-10 drops essential oils. Mix well and store in an amber coloured bottle.

For use in a diffuser:

Follow the instructions for your diffuser, but remember to use a maximum of 20 drops of essential oils.

For use as an air freshener:

Mix together 30-40 drops of essential oils with 1.5 ounces of distilled water and 1.5 ounces of high-proof alcohol, for example vodka (using alcohol is optional and you could use just water, but you will find the aroma lasts longer with the alcohol).

You can change your mood by using different blends of oils. A basic uplifting blend uses 2 drops of Basil oil, 1 drop of Cyprus oil and 1 drop of Grapefruit oil. Once you've mixed these together thoroughly you can add the blend to your diffuser for a great uplifting aroma.

A good blend to help with insomnia uses 10 drops of Chamomile oil, 5 drops of Clary Sage oil, and 4 drops of Bergamot oil. Mix the oils together thoroughly and store in an amber coloured bottle. You can then put 1-2 drops of your blend onto a tissue and place this inside your pillow case before going to bed to help you enjoy an uninterrupted night's sleep. You could also use the same blend in your diffuser an hour or so before going to bed, helping you to prepare for a good night's sleep.

Aromatherapy offers a great, natural, organic way for many people to cope with the pressures and stresses of modern life, and for some, it can even help with romance. Why not give it a go, and see how aromatherapy can change your life?

Revitalise Yourself With Aromatherapy

Are you tired, working hard and all you want to do is go home and relax?

For some of us it isn't always possible to go home from work and put our feet up and chill out! Aromatherapy and the use of essential oils has the ability to promote motivation, energy, strength, endurance and much more.

Here are some simple and effective ways in which to use aromatherapy for many and varied conditions. You can use inhalations, room sprays, bathing and your aromatherapy burner or diffuser.

When you get home take a mini break, this need only be 10-15 minutes. Choose some essential oils to inhale or diffuse. Sit in a comfortable chair and take some slow deep breaths. Breath in the essential oil aroma, feel your body beginning to relax and let go. Feel the tension from the day slip away and out of your body. Continue to breath slowly and stay with this for as long as you feel the need to. By doing this exercise you will begin to feel in harmony with your mind, body and soul and you will feel your energy returning. If you are unable to sit for any length of time you can lay down to do this exercise. Another way to experience relaxation with essential oils is to have a bath or foot bath, use dry inhalations or use aromatherapy room and body sprays.

When using essential oils to assist with raising your energy, relax or uplift your emotions one thing to take into account is to choose your favourite essential oils. As soon as you smell an aroma that you love, you are immediately transported to a place that no one can take away from you. Often pleasant and past memories or experiences will be evoked. You will naturally start to release tension and feel better.

I highly recommend you choose essential oils that resonate with you personally as this will give you the desired results faster. Below I have made a few suggestions from my own personal experience. Remember you can choose one essential oil or make a blend from three. It is up to you, your nose knows best and your body will tell you.

Bathing

Add 3 drops each Neroli, Rose and Jasmine or use them on their own.

Add 3 drops of Frankincense and Rose, 2 drops of Champa.

One of my all time favourite bath blends for relaxing is 2 drops of Vetiver and 3 drops of Rosewood or Geranium.

Room spray - add the following recipes to 100 ml of filtered or floral water.

I tend to use a lot of citrus essential oils in room sprays as they are uplifting to the emotions, energising and evoke a strong sense of happiness!

Mandarin, Bergamot, Grapefruit 10 drops each, with 2-3 drops of Geranium.

Sweet Orange, Lemon, 10 drops each, with 5 drops Sandalwood and 2 drops Peru Balsam.

Inhalations

Once again I personally love to use citrus essential oils, Lime, Grapefruit and Cardamom or Lemon Myrtle, Sweet Orange and Bergamot.

The combinations are endless; have fun, play and be creative, I promise you will fall in love with aromatherapy to improve your emotional, physical and spiritual being.

What is causing it?

There are numerous reasons, here are a few examples:

~Stress which there can be many causes

~Financial problems

~Health issues

~Depression

~Anxiety

~Inability to switch off your mind which can be caused by over stimulation

~Relationship problems

~Over excitement

As an aromatherapist I will focus on essential oils and methods of application that have been and still are very supportive for me on a personal level and for my clients. Firstly here is a list of some essential oils that assist in relaxation, calming a racing mind and insomnia.

Frankincense, Sandalwood, Clary Sage, Sweet Marjoram, Geranium, Patchouli, Lemon, Mandarin, Bergamot, Sweet Orange, Neroli, Rose, German Chamomile, Lavender, Ylang Ylang and Vetiver.

Please keep in mind that each of us is individuals and we may respond better to different essential oils/blends. Also some of these essential oils may be contra-indicated to those that have severe depression and feel that they want to sleep all of the time.

There are many essential oils to choose from. Some essential oils that can also be incorporated here are ~ Basil, Cypress, Juniper, Grapefruit, Tea Tree and Peppermint. These oils are strengthening to the mind and nervous system. they are also stimulating essential oils which can give you energy to support you through your day.

It is very important that you seek the advice of a fully qualified practitioner to receive the most appropriate treatment.

Aromatherapy and essentials oils can work extremely well with Eastern or Western herbs and it is very important to have someone that you can talk to, for this will help to release any pent up feelings and emotions.

Methods of applications that can be incorporated in to your life to support and improve your health and well-being.

~Inhalations are very effective and fast acting as they are a direct link to your brain.

~Anointing a blend or single oil on to the in step of your foot can be done morning and evening. I find 3 drops is sufficient.

~Regular massage will always be beneficial, start weekly and drop down to monthly for maintenance.

~Foot baths are wonderful and of course full body baths and you only want to sit in them for no more than 15 minutes otherwise you may not achieve your desired result.

~Room and body sprays are wonderful and one of my most used applications.

It is important to consult with your aromatherapy practitioner to ensure you have no contra-indications to any of the essential oils!

Tips~ where ever you sleep, make sure your space is conducive to supporting you.

For example: having a comfortable mattress and pillow, sheets that feel beautiful and soft on your skin. The weight of your bed covers, some like heavy covers, some prefer light covers.

Do you prefer a dark room, so that no light enters? Create a beautiful safe space, one that when you enter you feel so comfortable in that you will instantly begin to feel relaxed and nurtured. You may like soft music, soft lighting and fragrance to begin with. Whatever appeals to you is what you should do!

Aromatherapy 101

Aromatherapy is a kind of pseudo-science that utilizes herbal and aromatic plant resources, branded as aroma oils, and other sweet-scented amalgams for the intent of of changing an individual's concentration, mood, cognition or as a placebo. Certain vital oils like citronella have proven germ-killing properties, but there is unmoving medical indication validating effectiveness against bacteriological, mycological, or pathological contagions. Proof for the effectiveness of aromatherapy in handling homeopathic situations remains pitiable, with an actual deficiency of training commissioning arduous scientific approaches, but some indication subsists that vital oils may have healing possibilities.

Aromatherapy might have roots in ancient times by the practice of permeated scented emollients, prepared by softening desiccated herb material in greasy lard, cooking and then sifting. Numerous such emollients are defined to compliment the beliefs of the period concerning their curative properties. In the first century, condensed essential emollients have remained as a source of remedies from the time when the development of distillation became progressive, when 11th century distillers secluded essential oils by means of vapor condensation

The notion of aromatherapy was mainly suggested by a small figure of European inventors and clinicians, in 1907. The expression primarily gave the idea in print from the French manuscript on the theme: Aromathérapie: Les Huiles Essentielles, by René-Maurice Gattefossé, a scientist in the 1930's. Aromatherapy is the handling or deterrence of illness by usage of aromatic emollients. Additional specified usages comprise discomfort and nervousness decrease, augmentation of vigor and temporary recall, relaxation, follicular care, and lessening of eczema symptoms.

Two rudimentary instruments are presented to elucidate the supposed properties. One is the impact of smell on the brain, particularly the limbic system via the olfactory matrix. The latter is the undeviating pharmacological properties of the essential oils.

While exact information of the synapse between the body and essential oils is frequently counted by therapists, the effectiveness of aromatherapy is still unverified. Nevertheless, certain pilot clinical studies of aromatherapy in arrangement with supplementary methods demonstrate optimistic results. Aromatherapy is not an antidote, but benefits the physique to discover am indigenous approach to remedy itself and recover immunity.

Emollients with homogeneous content are prerequisite to comprise a definite volume of aroma elements that ordinarily occur in the oil. But there is no ruling that the elements cannot be supplementary in man-made formula to meet the conditions set by the FCC for that oil. The laws that govern aromatherapy oil preparation are still negligent.

Alternative Cancer Treatment - Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy is a form of alternative medicine that uses organic materials like plant materials like oils. It's also referred to as a form of alternative and complementary medicine which comes from the flowers, leaves, bark, branches, rind or roots of plants with therapeutic qualities.

Process
In this process, the powerful oils are mixed with soy bean or almond oil then water or alcohol and will be applied on the skin, dispersed in the air or it could also be applied as a compress.

Scents like lavender may indeed encourage real good effects, like for example, it's believed to have good effects to enhance your immunity from bacteria, cure herpes and shingles. It's also known as something to help remedy arthritis, heal wounds, boost memory and reduce depression. It's also like massage therapy that improves the flow of your blood and the likes.

Just how and where did aromatherapy start?
As everyone knows, Egypt is the homeland of medicines, perfumes and pharmaceuticals. It was 6,000 years ago when Egyptians discovered the health advantages of essential oils and so, they have developed the same and they have enhanced its use. They've discovered that when essential oils were applied onto the skin, it provides great benefits to the body.

At the moment, the industry or field of this kind of therapy has increased and it's now recognized to be one of the helpful tools of alternative medicine.

Aromatherapy as an alternative cancer treatment
Aromatherapy works together your sense of smell. When you inhale an aroma, it moves across the olfactory nerves located inside your nose and then moves towards the part of the brain controlling our moods, memories and capacity to learn. This is also known as the Limbic system. When this is activated, it releases endorphins, along with other euphoric chemicals that naturally occurs in the body.

As Aromatherapy uses oils along with other fragrances which help relax the body, additionally, it gives calming sensation to the person who goes through the therapy. Oils infused or mixed with lavender can be applied to the skin during a massage or it may also be added to your bath water.

Like what spas are doing, they heat the water and blend the oils to release the scents into the air. To all the cancer patients, Aromatherapy is suggested as an alternative cancer treatment to minimize nausea, pain and stress.

When you are a cancer patient, you must have a practitioner that can carry out aromatherapy to you. You cannot perform this at home or without help.. Aromatherapy is 100% safe for everyone. The essential oils that experts are applying on your skin will help a lot for your blood flow and the likes.

In addition to these, you must always remember that essential oils are extremely concentrated and they can irritate your skin if not used properly.

Two common oils that are being used in Aromatherapy:
1. Lavender
2. Tea tree

Aromatherapy for the Mind - Essential Oils to Improve Your Self-Confidence

Aroma-Psychology

The word Aromatherapy refers to the clinical use of essential oils usually combined with massage. Other applications are Inhalations, bathing and topical applications such as compressing, poultices and direct applications, all of which can be used in the home environment.

There is so much more to essential oils and their use in a clinical situation and here I will share what I consider to be a valuable tool that you can use to help improve your health and well-being on an emotional level.

Aroma-psychology specifically refers to the use essential oils to have a positive effect on your mind. Incorporating these natural plant pure plant extracts in to our everyday lives can uplift our moods and emotions, strengthen and stimulate our minds, aid in memory enhancement, and boost confidence. This kind of mental stimulation has a direct impact on our daily performance. Many corporations are now using essential oils to assist in improving the performance of their employees. Several years ago a study was carried out in Japan. They used lemon in the air-conditioning unit and found that the typists had made fewer errors. They also used specific oils at the end of the day having a winding down period.

Choosing the Right Essential Oil

Although they have specific properties, I believe that when we are working on an emotional level it is important to take your smell preference into consideration as you are more likely to have a positive response.

It is important to feel connected and enjoy the aroma of your chosen essential oil/s. When you inhale your favourite aromas take notice of how they make you feel emotionally and physically.

Do you instantly smile and feel uplifted?

Does a happy memory surface?

Is it as simple as just feeling good when you inhale your favourite fragrance?

Following are some recommendations to experience and boost your confidence, however if you do not resonate with these, choose ones that you personally favour.

Grapefruit is one of my favourites for me it represents, courage, boldness and confidence. It is a very emotionally uplifting and I often start my day with it.

I find all of the citrus oils to be very encouraging and uplifting ~ Lemon, Sweet Orange, Bergamot, Petitgrain, Mandarin and Neroli. These in particular are excellent for fragile people who tend to worry a lot, experience anxiety, stress and tension. Now that can be all of us at some time in our lives!

Heart oils like Rose, Jasmine, Melissa, Lavender and Ylang Ylang are very supportive they are for self acceptance, self love and love in general. When we come from a place of love we are more confident in our being.

Woody oils like Sandalwood, Cedarwood, and Rosewood are strengthening and grounding.

Frankincense and Sandalwood are excellent to support us in letting go of obsessive thoughts and being stuck. They help us to move forward.

Then we have Basil, Rosemary, and Peppermint these are very emotionally strengthening and energising. They are great for confidence building.

Spicy oils such as Ginger, Cinnamon, Cardamom and Clove are strengthening, emotionally warming and invigorating. They add excitement and motivation in to our daily lives.

Most of these essential oils can be used easily and effortlessly through dry inhalations, what I call Aromatherapy on the go! I love using disposable inhalers, they fit into my purse and I can use them whenever I feel like a boost.

Here is a tip for you~ take some time to experience your favourite aromas on their own simply by inhaling them. Write down your feelings and responses in an aromatherapy journal and use this information as a tool for whenever you may feel sad, anxious, stressed lacking confidence and so on.

Wishing you success on your Aromatique journey!

What Is Aromatherapy? - Plain And Simple

Many people know Aromatherapy to be beautiful smelling scents or a luxurious massage that they enjoy having once in a while.

Well I am here to tell you that it is much more than this.

Yes it is true essential oils or most of them smell beautiful and have the power to transport us to another place or time on an emotional level they can evoke positive responses, uplift our emotions, reducing stress, tension, anxiety and depression. They help to raise our self confidence, enhance our memory, promote relaxation or enhance our energy. They improve our state of mind.

On a physical level Aromatherapists use specific essential oils to assist in reducing symptoms of PMT and PMS, muscular aches and pains, inflammation and arthritic conditions. Some oils promote circulation, aid in the digestive processes, assist with IBS, rid the body of unwanted toxins and they are very good for boosting and improving our immune system. They are used in hair care, for hair and scalp conditions such as dandruff, to improve the condition of our hair.

I personally have had 17 years of working with my daughter treating and supporting her with essential oils, along with orthodox medications (for which I am very grateful as it has saved her life) for chronic lung disease, digestive problems and her emotional state of mind where she experiences depression, fear and anxiety. My daughter was born in 1988, Royal Women's Hospital, Sydney Australia. She was the youngest and smallest TOF baby born at that time, being 8weeks premature and weighing 1190 grams. I will go into more detail another time. My point is that I have found aromatherapy and other natural therapies to be an essential part of her treatments. I am equally supportive of orthodox and traditional/alternative medicine, there have been times when prescribed medicines simply have not worked and aromatherapy and naturopathic medicine has. Doctors and modern medicine saved my daughter's life at birth more than several times throughout her life. Natural/alternative medicine has supported her without any doubt where modern medicine hasn't.

How many of us love to take care of our skin?

We cleanse, tone, and moisture every, once in a while we will use serums and masks to nourish and boost our skins health. Pure essential oils are natural and safe to use on your skin and will improve your skins integrity, reduce scars, improve elasticity, reduce the onset of wrinkles and slow down the aging process. Some essential oils are excellent for the treatment of acne, reducing scarring and inflammation, healing wounds, treating symptoms of many skin conditions.

Essential oils are produced from different plant materials such as woods, bark, leaves, flowers, berries and more, by various extraction methods. They are very potent, approximately 70 times stronger than the original plant they are derived from.

There are many factors involved in improving our health and well being including good nutrition, water and fluid intake, exercise and so on. It is called 'synergy' a combination of all of the above to produce the best results.

The Beauty or should I say one of the beauties of Aromatherapy and natural medicine is that we can personalise and custom make products to suit your specific needs. We are all individuals with specific and unique needs. I hope this has given you a better understanding of one of my greatest passions I absolutely believe in Aromatherapy, because I have seen amazing results first hand. I encourage and invite you to reach out and learn more about the world of Aromatherapy and how you can incorporate it into your everyday lives easily and with little effort to improve your health and well being on all levels.

Aromatherapy Recipes Using Essential Oils

In ancient Egyptian times they used oils from flowers and herbs in their baths and for skin care, not only for their aromas but for the medicinal properties too. These oils are the volatile part of any plant and are extracted in different ways, by distillation, steam or compression. Once you have their oils they can be used individually or mixed together and can be put in the bath for a hot soak, a few drops added to a diffuser so the sweet aromas fill the air or added to a carrier or base oil for a massage. You can even get candles containing these oils or could add net oil to the melted wax as it gathers on the top of a burning candle.

All plants contain essential oils but in different quantities, some more than others. To get just one teaspoon of jasmine oil it takes 40,000 hand- picked jasmine flowers which is why this in one of the more expensive oils to buy. Rose is another flower that does not contain many oils and are usually extracted by using a solvent. The only down side with this method is that is gathers other properties from the plant as well as their oils. These are then known as absolutes and are well known in the fragrance industry and in cosmetics.

Fine essential oils are like diamonds or a fine champagne and known as the soul of any plant. Essential oils all have their own properties and used for different reasons, from rejuvenating, balancing and deep cleansing. They easily absorb in to the skin and can help psychologically and physically. Benefits of aromatherapy oils range from relief of headaches, mood swings, muscle relaxants, blood circulation and other healings.

There are hundreds of essential oils on the market and can be a daunting experience when going out to buy for the first time. Almost anyone can use essential oils but precautions do need to be taken. Because they are very potent it is important to dilute any oil before putting it on the skin and not to put too much in the batch as they can burn. You must ask yourself why you want to use these oils whether it be for a particular ailment and then how you are going to administer, either massage or inhalation so as to get the right ones. Below are a few just to get you started.

Basil - floral sweet aroma used for uplifting, energising and refreshing.

Bergamot - fresh and fruity used for uplifting and inspiring. An excellent deodoriser.

Chamomile - fruity, apple -like used for its calming properties

Clary sage - spicy, hay-like aroma for a euphoric feeling

Eucalyptus - Best known for inhalations and liniments and is very invigourating.

Geranium - A leafy-rose aroma with fruity, minty undertones. A soothing, mood lifting oil.

Grapefruit - This has a bitter citrus aroma which is very refreshing.

Lavender - A fresh almost eucalyptus aroma used in insect repellants, deodorants and room sprays. A calming and purifying influence.

Majarom sweet - Warm and spicy with a hint of nutmeg. Warming and balancing works well on sore muscles.

Orange sweet - Used for its refreshing, uplifting properties.

Rosemary - with its strong fresh, camphor aroma invigourates and clarifies.

Sandalwood - a sweet wood warm aroma. Perfect for that sensual soothing atmosphere

Ylang ylang - an intense floral almost jasmine aroma used for euphoria and sensuality.

Once you get used to the oils and their aromas you can mix your own but be careful with quantities.

Incense Use in Aromatherapy

Many people trust in the therapeutic, healing and relaxing qualities and results from aromatherapy. This information may be helpful to those that aren't aware of the vital role that herbal and resinous incenses can play in this type of healing. So what is aromatherapy and why do so many people use, enjoy and find it so helpful? Well aromatherapy basically consists of various methods of relaxation which involves herbal and other natural fragrances which are introduced into your personal space, usually a small comfortable room. The primary intention of which is to gently coax your mind and body into a deep state of peaceful healing relaxation.

Incenses can also be used in the aromatherapy treatment. In most cases these treatments are chosen to be helpful with headaches, anxiety, stress-related issues, insomnia as well other ailments. A wide variety of many herbal and spice incense blends contains some significant amounts of these useful oils. The oil of lavender for example, is considered helpful for insomnia and stress headaches. Another great example is the peppermint oil which is good for travel sickness, nausea and it is also good as a mental stimulant. Also, eucalyptus is well known for being quite effective for those who have colds or coughs, while rose and sandalwood oils are best known for their positive emotional effects and help stimulate the imagination. There are literally hundreds of varieties to choose from be it resin, herbal, spice or a combination of these ingredients. There will surely be a type or blend of incense available to fit almost any aromatherapy need or specific treatment.

Aromatherapy is considered as being an alternative to the classic medicine practice and it focuses on using the therapeutic abilities of most essential oils, whether they come from tree leaves, flowers or plant resins. These oils which give the plants and flowers their fragrance and wonderful aroma are what many consider to be the active medicinal and healing component. These "natural oils" are included in many commercial pharmaceuticals such as bath oils, skin care products and other treatments as one of their active ingredients. Many of these same oils are also used in significant amounts in better herbal incense brands available today and can be used for the same purpose as the essential oil is used just in a different delivery method. They play an important role in aromatherapy now and can be used in most of the same type of aroma remedies. Incense is a wonderful addition to any holistic type treatment.

Many people and faiths profess the use of incense aromatherapy to be of great significance in the aspect of metaphysical healing and health due to the variety of powerful Spiritual qualities that these aromas are widely believed to possess. To Health, Love and Enjoyment Peace!

What Are Aromatherapy Hydrolats, and Why Are They Useful to Health?

Hydrolats - also known as hydrosols - have been described as the 'next aromatherapy'. They are safer than essential oils, easier to use, and gentler. But what exactly are hydrolats?

Most essential oils are produced by a process of steam distillation. Here's how it is done:

You take a large quantity of, say lavender stalks, and you put them into a still. You then allow steam to pass through the plant material. (It is far better to do this under gentle pressure and gentle temperature. Higher temperatures give a greater yield, but a lesser quality.)

As the plant is exposed to the steam, many active chemicals in the plant are released into the steam, which is then condensed (cooled down by passing into a cool tube). The steam then turns back into water, but the water now contains many wonderful natural healing chemicals that were in the plant.

Now here's the interesting bit: some of those chemicals are so-called hydrophillic (that means they love water and dissolve in it), while others are oily and 'hydrophobic' (they are repelled by water). When you leave this water-oily mix for 15 minutes or so, the two parts quickly separate out, just as vinegar and oil will separate out when left to their own devices. The oil is the plant's 'essential oil', and the water is known as a hydrolat, or a hydrosol.

So we can understand that, generally speaking, the hydrolat contains the water soluble chemicals from the plant, while the essential oil contains the non-water soluble chemicals.

Now consider something else: the human body is composed of about 60% water. Water is the major compound in every single cell in the body, and also in the fluid that runs around the outside of the cells.

So if we want to get the balancing, therapeutic energies from the plants to our body's cells, would it not make great sense to use the ones that dissolve in water? We can begin to see the power of the hydrolat!

Hydrolats are great to use in situations that involve great gentleness and delicacy. They can be used on children (even babies), on the elderly, and many vets use them too.

One word of warning. Hydrolats can be a little unstable, and for that reason they are frequently adulterated with alcohol and or preservatives. These chemicals certainly preserve their shelf life, but they may adversely affect their therapeutic value. So it is always better to try to find hydrolats that are unadulterated and 100% pure, but also that come from a reputable supplier who tests each batch for the existence of microbes.

You will be familiar with some hydrolats already. True 'Rose Water' is in reality rose hydrolat. Witchhazel, which is a wonderful natural antioxidant, that is great for skin care is the hydrolat from the Hamamelis plant. You may be familiar with Orange Blossom water (neroli hydrolat), and of course Lavender water too.

Hydrolats are great for skin care (having a perfect pH value) and most are quite safe to digest. Try spraying Rose hydrolat on your face, on bed linen, or add it to yoghurt for a taste of luxury!

Jonathan Hinde is an aromatherapist, teacher of meditation, and Managing Director of Oshadhi Ltd, which provides over 60 different pure, unadulterated aromatherapy hydrolats.
