Top Ten Uses of Rose Geranium Essential Oil

Scientific name: Pelargonium Graveolens Roseum. There are over 700 different varieties of Geranium. The Roseum on the end of the scientific name means the Geranium we are talking about here is a Rose Geranium. It actually smells kind of like a rose. It is oftentimes used to dilute a rose essential oil. The oil is steam distilled from the leaves, stalk, and flowers of the rose geranium plant. The Dutch sailors carried the plant with them and it quickly flourished practically wherever it went. This is a very adaptable plant, the Europeans grew to love it for its fragrance and its adaptability-it would flourish in almost any climate. Folklore dictated that the plant would keep away evil spirits, that's why you see it planted near doorways and windows. Geranium oil is said to suture both the mental and the physical, meaning it will help wounds that are emotional or physical close and heal.

1. The primary constituent is geraniol, which builds collagen fibers (the protein that is the main building block of bone, cartilage, tendon, and other connective tissues) in the tissues. This means that it creates a regenerative action in these parts of the body, especially the skin. When you apply Geranium essential oil to a wound it will help stop the bleeding and give the skin what it needs to repair itself. Apply the oil to a cut, use a butterfly bandage to pull the edges together, and it is almost as good as stitches in a day or two. Please note that it is not a magic wand, if you are bleeding heavily, have cut an artery or something else that requires immediate surgical attention, please visit the emergency room, but using Geranium along the way will help minimize damage and soothe your emotions.

2. Excellent for skin. Any kind of skin challenge, eczema, acne, rashes, wounds, bruises, ulcers, herpes, and more. It even helps the skin appear more radiant and youthful! Apply a drop directly to an area of concern, dilute in a carrier oil for larger areas, or simply add 5-6 drops to a two ounce spray bottle filled with water, shake well before each application, and use as a body spray or (making sure the eyes are closed) to spray on the face.

3. A diuretic, it helps reduce water retention and edema (swollen ankles and legs). Apply to the legs or use 3-4 drops in a teaspoon of carrier oil and rub from the feet up to the knees. Always rub towards the heart, never away.

4. Improves immune function by balancing the hormones, the emotions, opening the circulatory system, and assisting the lymphatic system. Additionally, it helps reduce stress and stress reduces the immune system.

5. Balances hormones by opening up the circulatory system and allowing the hormones to be carried to where they need to be.

6. Great for female problems-PMS, swollen breasts, cramps, heavy or missing periods, etc. It even helps normalize the fluctuating hormones experienced during menopause! Apply to the ankles, the inner thighs, the soft upper arms, or even the breasts. If you are experiencing menstrual cramps apply on location. If you are experiencing heavy menstrual bleeding, apply to the abdominal area. You may initially experience a brief time of heavier flow, but then it should diminish to a more normal level of bleeding.

7. Marvelous for the emotions. Inhaling Geranium will ease anxiety, reduce tension, and serve as an antidepressant. It helps you release negative and depressing thoughts. In fact, if you are feeling suicidal or working with someone who feels suicidal, have them smell the oil and put a drop on their sternum, it can eliminate those suicidal feelings!

8. A great smelling insect repellant. Note it can attract bees; if you are allergic to bee stings use a different essential oil as an insect repellant just to be on the safe side.

9. Marvelous for use after surgery, especial plastic surgery, because it not only disinfects the area, but helps the skin and tissues underneath heal without scarring. It is also a great anti-inflammatory.

10. Great for hemorrhoids. Simply apply to the affected area several times a day and the swelling will go down and the pain will disappear.

*Only use essential oils internally that are truly 100% pure, such as Be Young oils. Oils that are cut or synthetic can have dangerous side effects if used internally. Always error on the side of caution and use common sense.

A Guide To Buying Aromatherapy Essential Oils

The market for aromatherapy products is huge, and, like most other goods, there's lots of counterfeit items about, so it is sensible to be extremely careful when you are considering a purchase. So, exercise caution before reaching for your wallet.

Before you buy aromatherapy essential oils, you need to ask yourself just why you're buying them. Perhaps it's a candle, a healing liquid or for a massage oil to treat your aching knees, or perhaps for another complaint.

Next, you need to know which essential oils to buy if they are to be blended together. If you're going to use it as massage oil, you need to be sure of which ones to buy. Read up all you can about it or meet a practitioner before investing money in this.

Lastly, please realize that these oils are not made all alike. They vary in origin, method of production, ingredients and purity. So, bear in mind all the above factors before buying your bottles.

Where to buy essential oils from?

Aromatherapy oils can be bought from just about anywhere- dedicated aromatherapy stores, health food shops, herb shops, cosmetic shops, open-air markets, drug stores, supermarkets and online stores.

If you want them as therapeutic essential oils, go to herb stores and health food shops where they are knowledgeable about giving you what you need, rather than go to general supermarkets where you may not get the right thing for your specific requirements. You can also buy them locally in neighborhood health food stores, though they may not have a wide range.

If this is not enough for you and you want a wider canvas to choose from, do you know where to buy them from? Well, you can buy from Internet stores such as MotherNature.com, Essential7, Naturalfragrances.net, 100puresessentialoils.com, quinessence.com, Ebay and Amazon.

Lastly, you can also buy from well-established mail order companies that can send them on to you at a lower cost than any health food store.

This should take away all the confusion in your mind about where to buy essential oils.

Tips for first-time buyers: By now, you know exactly from where to buy, but do you know what to look out for before you buy these oils? Here are some tips:

• Ensure that the essential oils you're buying are sold in traditional glass bottles with a dark amber color that blocks light. Plastic bottles dissolve, get tainted and become weak and impure, so they don't serve the purpose.

• Do you find "100% Essential Oil" or "Pure Essential Oil" on the label of the bottle you're looking at? If yes, buy it.

• To check the purity of these oils, take a break for a few minutes so that your nose is clear of earlier fragrances. When you sniff an essential oil, keep your nose at a safe distance from the bottle or the fragrance might just hit your nostrils and make you dizzy.

• If a bottle looks dated or dusty, set it aside because old products have very low healing abilities as they age with time.

Making Your Own Essential Oil Blends

Do you want to know how to make your own essential oil blends? If your answer is yes, here are some useful tips you can follow to make the perfect concoction. You may use them for yourself or give them as gifts for friends and family.

Making your own essential oil blends

The first thing you should do is prepare the materials you will need for making the oils. Get yourself some small glass bottles, a compact notebook, plenty of cotton balls and droppers. Of course, before buying a selection of oils you will have to know what will work best for you. Do your own research, it will familiarize you with the different kinds of oils and which combinations may suit you.

Essential oils have three major categories: top notes, middle notes, and base notes.

The top note is the initial scent we smell, it is also the first to disappear. The middle note is the body of the scent, while the base note is the aroma that stays the longest.

When mixing essential oil blends, make sure you have the three types of notes in your concoction. The ratio is usually three drops of top note, two drops of middle note, and one drop of base note.

Some examples of top notes are eucalyptus, lemon, and orange. This usually evaporates quickly - just within two hours. Middle note oils may include lavender, juniper, rosemary, and nutmeg. Some oils included in base notes are sandalwood, jasmine, rose, and clove.

Before you start testing blends, organize your oils into their respective categories. Use a fresh cotton ball or a dropper for each so you don't mix the scent and contaminate them.

Begin mixing your blend by taking three oils and either dropping them into a clean glass container or dipping a cotton ball and placing them in a glass container. You may actually stick to your own ratio. Just make sure you have enough so you can smell the mixture. Plus, this will save you from making a batch that does not appeal to you.

After mixing your personal blend in a small bottle, wait for five minutes and smell the air above the bottle. Assess the scent. Do you like what you smell? What kind of impression does it leave? After this, seal the bottle and store it in a dry and cool place. Smell the blend again after a few hours. You can make your final decision if this combination works for you after two days.

From this point on, you can try experimenting and finding your own blend. You can even mix the essential oil blend to any soap, lotion, and candle. If you are using the oil for perfume, use a base note like sunflower oil, olive oil, and grape seed oil.

Using aromatherapy diffusers

A great way of using your oils is by using aromatherapy diffusers. These devices use ultrasonic waves to release essential oils in their purest form. This may enhance the effects of aromatherapy and spread the scent to the entire room. It does not even involve any heating. You can find many aromatherapy diffusers in your local stores. You can also find them in online shops, with various designs and affordable prices.

Top Ten Uses for Lavender Essential Oil

Scientific name: Lavendula Augustifolia. Lavender is perhaps the most well-known and least understood of the essential oils. Practically everyone knows that lavender is great for burns, but few understand that there are over 30 (some say 40) different species of lavender and that many of the lavender essential oils are not even lavender, they are lavenda essential oils (smell similar, very cheap to produce, and containing very few if any of the healing properties of true lavender). The best lavender essential oil is from true lavender plants (Lavendula Augustifolia, previously known as Lavendula Officinalis Vera {Vera optional}) grown at altitudes of 5,000 feet or higher. This is the truly universal oil, a natural anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial (being currently tested against MRSA), antimicrobial, hormone balancing, skin cell regenerating, diuretic, muscle feeding, histamine blocking, anti-fungal, and overall body tonic essential oil! A true, pure lavender essential oil will contain properties that will affect all ten of the body's systems and still be gentle enough to use with a newborn baby (remember to dilute appropriately 0-2 years 1 drop essential oil to 3 drops carrier oil, 2-3 years 50/50 dilution, 3+ no dilution needed), earning it the name of The Universal Oil.

1. The first oil to grab for any kind of burn. If the burned area is large and tender to the touch you may want to add 5-10 drops of Lavender to one ounce of purified water in a spray bottle, shake well (and often) and spray the burnt area.

2. Reduces scarring and assists in removing old scars. Simply apply to the affected area several times a day. If you are preventing a scar from forming you have the added bonus of its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties!

3. Insect repellant and great for bites and stings. It soothes the wound, calms the emotions, reduces any inflammation, and has an antihistamine affect. (Note: if you have a known life-threatening allergy to stings please visit the emergency room, but go ahead and apply the Lavender oil on the way.) You can also use it in a sachet to repel bugs that may be hiding out in your dresser or closet.

4. Not only is Lavender great for all skin issues, it has the double benefit of addressing hormonal imbalance skin issues (not just acne, but any way the hormone imbalance may present itself, psoriasis, rashes, cold sores, even boils). While you are using it on your skin it is also prevents wrinkles, scars, and encourages skin cell regeneration!

5. Diffuse Lavender in a sick room, it relaxes both the patient and the caregiver, strengthens the immune system, and it cleanses the air. A great disinfectant, it was carried by soldiers and medics in World War I and II to use on wounds.

6. Assists in reducing the pain associated with migraine or tension headaches. Apply to the back of the neck, temples, and tops of the ears to relax the muscles and the emotions and thus reduce (or eliminate) the headache. Also great for emotional imbalances, mood swings, and depression that often accompany headaches.

7. A drop or two applied to the pulse points of the wrists can drop high blood pressure or calm someone who is overexcited. Great for use before visiting the doctor, not only will it protect you from any germs you may be exposed to, but it will also help calm any fears you may experience by being there. Also great to use before visiting the dentist. You can even apply it directly to a toothache and it will help relieve the pain there!

8. Great for insomnia! Add 5-8 drops to 1/4 cup Be Young Starflake Bath salts (highly crystalized bath salts that are great for absorbing essential oils), then add to a tub of water, soak for 20 minutes (or more), rinse off (because the soak will bring toxins out of the body and to the skin and you do not want to reabsorb them) and you will be ready for bed. Don't want to soak? Put a drop on the back of the neck, temples, and tops of the ears. Add 5-10 drops to one ounce of water in a spray bottle, shake well and often and lightly spray your pillow, bed linens, or just spray around the bedroom. This also works well as "Monster spray" to scare away the monsters who are keeping your little ones from sleeping. It will calm their emotions and allow them to relax and go to sleep.

9. Great for any respiratory challenges, clears mucus, calms spasms, even aids in stopping an asthma attack or in dealing with hay fever challenges. Take a whiff; apply to the chest and under the nose.

10. Marvelous for muscle aches and pains, it feeds the muscles by increasing nitric oxide in the body (a free radical, one of those marvelous chemical molecules produced during lightning storms that makes the world so fresh and alive afterwards); this enables the muscles to perform with more strength. Additionally, it reduces inflammation and muscle spasms.

*Only use essential oils internally that are truly 100% pure, such as Be Young oils. Oils that are cut or synthetic can have dangerous side effects if used internally. Always error on the side of caution and use common sense.

Relaxing Essential Oils Used In Aromatherapy

Explore the world of aromatherapy and find your innermost self. Check out the thousands of aromatherapy recipes and blends to find which ones suit you, your needs and work best for you.

You can use the power of aromatherapy in a number of different ways. You can massage the oils into your skin. People find inhaling the soothing aromas by either burning candles or using a diffuser helps to change their mood and relax.

If you like the thought of a massage, you will need to add the essential oils to a carrier or base oil. Each carrier oil has its own unique properties and tends to be used for different skin types and conditions. If you have sensitive skin, or are prone to acne, using a gentle oil such as Grapeseed oil is good for your condition. If you have a more challenging skin condition such as eczema, using Almond, Evening Primrose, Olive or Jojoba oils would be a better choice. If you have scars using Calendula oil is great, while Comfrey or Rosemary oils are good for stings, burns cuts and grazes.

For a full body massage you will need about 1-2 ounces of carrier oil. The recommended measure of essential oil is 1-2 drops per teaspoon of carrier oil; using any more than this or using it neat can burn your skin.

There are many recipes for you to discover, deciding what results you want to achieve and how you want to achieve them is the key to selecting the right recipe for you. Most recipes can be used either in the bath, in a diffuser or for a massage, whichever is your preference. If you stick to the general methods for mixing your oils, then you'll be OK and you'll achieve the results you're aiming for.

For the bath:

Use 2 ounces carrier oil to 15-20 drops essential oils. Mix the oils together and store in an amber coloured bottle (to minimise the evaporation of the essential oils and to stop the oils degrading over time).

For a massage:

Use 1 ounce of carrier oil mixed with 8-10 drops essential oils. Mix well and store in an amber coloured bottle.

For use in a diffuser:

Follow the instructions for your diffuser, but remember to use a maximum of 20 drops of essential oils.

For use as an air freshener:

Mix together 30-40 drops of essential oils with 1.5 ounces of distilled water and 1.5 ounces of high-proof alcohol, for example vodka (using alcohol is optional and you could use just water, but you will find the aroma lasts longer with the alcohol).

You can change your mood by using different blends of oils. A basic uplifting blend uses 2 drops of Basil oil, 1 drop of Cyprus oil and 1 drop of Grapefruit oil. Once you've mixed these together thoroughly you can add the blend to your diffuser for a great uplifting aroma.

A good blend to help with insomnia uses 10 drops of Chamomile oil, 5 drops of Clary Sage oil, and 4 drops of Bergamot oil. Mix the oils together thoroughly and store in an amber coloured bottle. You can then put 1-2 drops of your blend onto a tissue and place this inside your pillow case before going to bed to help you enjoy an uninterrupted night's sleep. You could also use the same blend in your diffuser an hour or so before going to bed, helping you to prepare for a good night's sleep.

Aromatherapy offers a great, natural, organic way for many people to cope with the pressures and stresses of modern life, and for some, it can even help with romance. Why not give it a go, and see how aromatherapy can change your life?

Quit Smoking Using Essential Oils

We all know smoking is not the easiest habit to kick. The following tips will help you decrease the desire to smoke, rebuild your lungs (use this part even if you don't want to kick the habit) and deal with withdrawal symptoms.

Decrease the Desire:

Spice for Life essential oil blend from Be Young on the tongue before lighting up can help decrease the desire. Take one drop with each meal to help increase the immune system (it is stressful to quit smoking, stress decreases the immune system).

Eucalyptus (Radiata) will stop cravings and also helps clean out the receptor sites. Every 10-15 minutes apply 1 drop of Eucalyptus to arm and lick off. Drink 8-10 glasses of pure water each day. You may want to rotate Eucalyptus and Rosemary, or use them together. You can also do one drop of Eucalyptus and one drop of Rosemary at the same time. This will be stronger. (Note: only use an essential oil internally that has been approved for internal use! Many essential oils contain synthetics that are not okay to use internally. I recommend the Be Young brand because of its guarantees of purity and the testing done to assure that purity.)

Applying Myrtle to the bottoms of the feet will help remove the desire.

Use EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique). Google this, it's easy to find instructions online.

Remember, whenever you take something out of your life you replace it with something else, make a conscious decision of what you want to replace smoking with, preferably something that makes you feel good, some examples are: going for a walk, yoga, building models, reading, learning a new skill. People are all different, some need to keep their hands busy, others find a need to fill the space with something emotional, others need to involve their mouths-we recommend taking up the harmonica as opposed to using food. Some people find that making balloon animals helps them.

Dealing with Withdrawal:

Applying Dill essential oil to the wrists helps reduce the sweating that can often accompany withdrawal.

Lavender, Marjoram, Orange, and/or Sandalwood can also help with withdrawal. Diffuse and apply to temples.

If you get a withdrawal headache, apply Peppermint to the temples and back of neck. (Note: Peppermint can be a bit strong, you may find you need to dilute it in a carrier oil.)

Quiet Scent blend from Be Young can help with the nervous jitters.

Use EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique).

An EAT (Emotional Aromatic Touch) treatment is often very beneficial. I'll write more about this in another article. Simplified, it's using seven different essential oils in defined patterns on the back to create an emotional release or it can also be done by applying those seven different essential oils to the hands or the feet on certain reflexology points to trigger a gentle emotional release.

Rebuilding your lungs:

To get some of the gunk out of the lungs and get them started regenerating... apply one drop of Eucalyptus, Peppermint, or Breathe essential oil blend from Be Young to the chest (if you are a man) or to the back (if you are a woman). Apply a warm compress and leave on until it feels cool. Rinse off. Why the different locations? You are going to be drawing toxins out with the compress and the essential oil. You do not want to draw those toxins through the breast tissue. Why rinse off afterwards? Because you have drawn those toxins to the surface, you want them gone, not reabsorbed! Repeat with the feet.

Diffuse the Breathe blend. I have seen a lot of people who simply diffuse the Breathe blend, or put a drop or two in their hands, rub them together, and then cup their hands around their nose and inhale and experience a strengthening of their lungs. If you are unable to quit smoking, please add the Breathe blend to your day to strengthen your lungs and improve your health in spite of the smoking.

Liver Cleanse daily. Drink plenty of water.

Learn more about the Liver Cleanse by reading the article I have already written. Essentially, it is one drop of Lemon essential oil, one drop of Peppermint essential oil and one teaspoon to one tablespoon of fresh lemon juice taken every morning upon rising. Remember to use an essential oil approved for internal use.

Be sure to drink plenty of water to flush the toxins from your system. Your goal is one ounce of water for every half pound you weigh. For example, if you weigh 160 pounds, you want to drink 80 ounces of water a day.

Use Peppermint Essential Oil to Improve Your Memory, Digestion, and Breath

I dare you to feel better. Many of you know Benjamin Franklin as an inventor and writer but did you remember that he developed community resources such as hospitals, libraries, and the University of Pennsylvania to help people. While attending the University of Pennsylvania, Violet volunteered at the Benjamin Franklin Hospital as a Candy Striper, and wrote a research paper that invited people to improve their health with peppermint essential oil. Dr Matthews supervised her research project. You too can be inspired by her example and enjoy the following ways using Peppermint Essential Oil can help you:

First, inhaling this oil can help you improve your memory and concentration.

Second, using the extracted oil from the peppermint leaves can ease your digestion.

Third, peppermint essential oil can help you with your sense of taste and your breath.

When Candy Striper Violet delivered the mail to the patients at the Benjamin Franklin Hospital she would tell them: "My grandma's memory has improved because she inhales peppermint essential oil. She agreed to help me with my research project and for the last three weeks she has inhaled peppermint essential oil three times per day. I see that her concentration has improved. Now, when I visit her, she can tell me what happened on the news that day." The patients asked her and the doctor: "Can we improve our memories too?"

Candy Striper Violet knows patient Fred's tummy hurts. On her daily visits, she gives him peppermint candy to eat after his meals. Fred tells his doctor: "My tummy always feels better after I see Candy Striper Violet." The doctor sits down and asks Fred questions confirming the findings for their research project. The doctor tells Fred: "You can dare to feel better." Fred says: "I have."

At the library late at night, Violet meets with her research partner Keith and he tells her: "I can't taste my food." Violet reminds him to inhale peppermint essential oil and puts a few drops in his water. Keith notices he can taste again. She says: " Thank you. You also have better breath now." She offers him some peppermint candy to enjoy later.

After 6 months of research Violet and Keith ask Dr. Matthews to review their research documentation on the benefits of peppermint essential oil. The doctor tells Candy Striper Violet: "Indeed, the patients feel better and they can eat with ease. Now they can taste their food. They always remember you and your peppermint candy. Their memories have improved. Let's publish your research findings on the benefits of using peppermint essential oil to ease digestion, improve the sense of taste, and to improve memory and concentration."

I guide clients and students trough self-discovery and coping with illness, losses, and challenges. Essential Oils and Your Skin

So you've finally decided to bite the bullet and start your own skin care line. For some of you, that means creating products for yourself or loved ones, and for others it means creating products for resale. Whatever the case may be, you've looked into creating bath and body products and have come to find that essential oils are an essential, no pun intended, part of the creation process.

The first step is finding/creating your base. If you are looking to create your own lotion, it's best to find a good lotion base first. Obviously you want to look for wholesale and bulk. These are great keywords to keep in mind when creating your product. Oftentimes you may find a company that provides base in small quantities, and the price will be outrageous. If you buy in larger quantities, you can save quite a bit of money. Once you decide the product base, it's time to research how you want to go about customizing with essential oils. Every essential oil will have different benefits. Some will provide more moisture, others will have health benefits. Decide what you want your product to do. Do you want it to be beneficial health-wise, or would you rather have a product that is more focused on beauty? Furthermore, are you looking to create an organic or natural product, or something more synthetic. These are all great points to keep in mind, particularly when it comes to marketing your product.

Once you decide what kind of product you want to make, it's time to find the best price and availability on essential oils. Once again, it's important to look for terms like 'bulk' or 'wholesale' when looking for essential oils. If you are creating your own product, chances are you will need large quantities. If you go to a local drug store or beauty supply store, they can market these essential oils up exponentially. Furthermore, you want to make sure to find 100% pure oils. What you will find in doing research, is that many companies cut the essential oil with what is called a 'carrier' oil. The company then drives up the cost on a synthetic product that will not have all the benefits you need. Finally, from a marketing standpoint, it is a great benefit to you, the seller, to provide a product with 100% pure ingredients as much as possible.

As I always say, it is up to you to be the most intelligent consumer possible. Research, research, research. I often have people coming to me and asking how to start their own line. If you create a product line, you can make fantastic product, work from home and customize everything the way you want. However, you have to know the product back and forth. Look into every ingredient, take stock of the back and body products you use and like most, see what ingredients are in them. Finally, be a smart shopper and buy bulk. For bulk essential oils, find them at wholesale costs and large quantities from a reputable company.

Bulk Apothecary is a full service provider and industry leader of essential oils, unscented lotion base and other unscented bases along with plastic bottles, lip balm and any other soap making supplies. We pride ourselves on offering the absolute best quality and best prices in the USA.

Aromatherapy for the Mind - Essential Oils to Improve Your Self-Confidence

Aroma-Psychology

The word Aromatherapy refers to the clinical use of essential oils usually combined with massage. Other applications are Inhalations, bathing and topical applications such as compressing, poultices and direct applications, all of which can be used in the home environment.

There is so much more to essential oils and their use in a clinical situation and here I will share what I consider to be a valuable tool that you can use to help improve your health and well-being on an emotional level.

Aroma-psychology specifically refers to the use essential oils to have a positive effect on your mind. Incorporating these natural plant pure plant extracts in to our everyday lives can uplift our moods and emotions, strengthen and stimulate our minds, aid in memory enhancement, and boost confidence. This kind of mental stimulation has a direct impact on our daily performance. Many corporations are now using essential oils to assist in improving the performance of their employees. Several years ago a study was carried out in Japan. They used lemon in the air-conditioning unit and found that the typists had made fewer errors. They also used specific oils at the end of the day having a winding down period.

Choosing the Right Essential Oil

Although they have specific properties, I believe that when we are working on an emotional level it is important to take your smell preference into consideration as you are more likely to have a positive response.

It is important to feel connected and enjoy the aroma of your chosen essential oil/s. When you inhale your favourite aromas take notice of how they make you feel emotionally and physically.

Do you instantly smile and feel uplifted?

Does a happy memory surface?

Is it as simple as just feeling good when you inhale your favourite fragrance?

Following are some recommendations to experience and boost your confidence, however if you do not resonate with these, choose ones that you personally favour.

Grapefruit is one of my favourites for me it represents, courage, boldness and confidence. It is a very emotionally uplifting and I often start my day with it.

I find all of the citrus oils to be very encouraging and uplifting ~ Lemon, Sweet Orange, Bergamot, Petitgrain, Mandarin and Neroli. These in particular are excellent for fragile people who tend to worry a lot, experience anxiety, stress and tension. Now that can be all of us at some time in our lives!

Heart oils like Rose, Jasmine, Melissa, Lavender and Ylang Ylang are very supportive they are for self acceptance, self love and love in general. When we come from a place of love we are more confident in our being.

Woody oils like Sandalwood, Cedarwood, and Rosewood are strengthening and grounding.

Frankincense and Sandalwood are excellent to support us in letting go of obsessive thoughts and being stuck. They help us to move forward.

Then we have Basil, Rosemary, and Peppermint these are very emotionally strengthening and energising. They are great for confidence building.

Spicy oils such as Ginger, Cinnamon, Cardamom and Clove are strengthening, emotionally warming and invigorating. They add excitement and motivation in to our daily lives.

Most of these essential oils can be used easily and effortlessly through dry inhalations, what I call Aromatherapy on the go! I love using disposable inhalers, they fit into my purse and I can use them whenever I feel like a boost.

Here is a tip for you~ take some time to experience your favourite aromas on their own simply by inhaling them. Write down your feelings and responses in an aromatherapy journal and use this information as a tool for whenever you may feel sad, anxious, stressed lacking confidence and so on.

Properties of the essential oils that are beneficial to our skin are as follows.

They are anti-septic, stimulate and regenerate cell growth, assist with wound healing, improve circulation and muscle tone, aid in reducing inflammation, stop itching, improve the integrity of your skin and regulate sebum production.

To gain the most benefit from your skin care it is important to use high quality ingredients.

The environment in which they are kept is important, stored in a cupboard or drawn away from direct sunlight, with an even temperature. I keep my raw products in a cooler.

It is very important to have the correct dilutions and combinations of essential oils to achieve your desired result and so that they do not work against each other. If you are unsure consult with a fully qualified Aromatherapist.

You can have your skin care custom made to suit your specific condition.

Acne is a very common condition and I have had very good results using specific essential oils. There are a variety of causes that produce acne and it is important to understand what the cause is and address it. Some of the symptoms are inflammation, pain, skin sensitivity, depression and low self esteem. Essential oils are excellent for reducing scarring and as you can see the effects of acne are more than skin deep.

Surgical scars can most certainly be reduced dramatically with the applications of specific essential oils for example Rose, Frankincense and Myrrh. These oils are exceptional for a healthy, glowing skin. Frankincense and Myrrh are natural skin preservatives and keep your skin looking younger.

First aid using essential oils

How many times have you burnt yourself while cooking or stoking a fire? For myself I always reach for Lavender! It is exceptional and can be applied directly onto a minor burn, preferably straight away and several times after, you will experience an immediate response. The pain and scarring is reduced, often there will be no scarring. Cold water and Ice are important to use if you have a more than a minor burn as the cooler temperature assists in preventing your skin from cooking. Do not hesitate to go to hospital if you have a serious burn.

Insect bites, I am everyone's mosquito repellent, much to my disappointment, they drive me crazy and all I can say is thank goodness for essential oils like Patchouli, Lavender and German Chamomile! These oils stop itching as they are anti-pruritic, reduce inflammation. For those of us that are sensitive and have nasty reactions they aid in the healing of my skin. I carry Patchouli with me everywhere I go for emergency first aid. I recommend it be in your first aid kit along with Tea tree and Lavender.

Minor cuts and abrasions can be treated easily and very effectively through topical applications and sprays.

We know how painfully itchy and uncomfortable measles and chickenpox are, Yes?

What Are Essential Oils? An Overview of Essential Oils

Essential oils are highly concentrated liquids that contain volatile aroma compounds from specific plants. Contrary to being called "oils", they are not oily feeling at all. The majority of them are clear, but there are some that are amber or yellow in color. The color would vary on what type of plant the oil was made from.

These oils are made by extracting them from a particular plant species. They can be extracted from many different parts of the plant, such as the flower, seeds, stems, bark, leaves, roots, and wood of the plant. There are several different methods of extraction, the most common being steam distillation. Some other methods are carbon dioxide extraction, pressing, and solvent extraction.

Essential oils are sold either as a pure oil, oil made from only one kind of plant, or as a blend of several different oils. Buying the blended oils saves you from having to buy each one separately and then mixing them yourself. Buying all of the oils individually can be quite pricey, so buying blends can save you money as well as time.

However, the disadvantage is that you have no control over the blend ratios and which oils are used in the blend. Also, by not blending them yourself, the blend can't be reliably mixed with other oils if you don't know what oils were used. Some oils can't be mixed with each other, so it's a good idea to know which ones can and can't be combined before mixing.

Essential oils should not be confused with perfume or fragrance oils. Essential oils are extracted directly from real plants. That means the oil contains the true essence of the plant, including any therapeutic values the plant it was derived from has.

Perfume and fragrance oils are made from artificial aromas or fragrances, or they are made with artificial substances in addition to any natural compounds. Therefore, they are not derived from the plants themselves, nor do they have any therapeutic benefits. These are generally used just to give something a particular scent, such as in soap making or perfumes.

The chemical composition of essential oils and their aromas allows them to have physical and even psychological benefits on people. The most common ways to obtain these benefits are by inhaling the oil and applying it directly to the skin. The easiest way to inhale it is by using a diffuser. When applying it directly to the skin, it's generally diluted as the full concentrate oil can cause irritation to the skin.

Essential oils, either in pure form or blended, can have significant therapeutic benefits on people. There are many different uses for them, depending on the specific benefits of the particular oil. With over 300 different essentials, there is sure to be something for everyone.

Essential oils can also be used in massage. The essential oil is diluted with carrier oil or massage oil and massage into the skin. This is a very relaxing method of externally absorbing essential oils. Read more about it here: Essential Oils in Massage.

Stress and Essential Oils - Which Essential Oils Can Alleviate Stress?

When it comes to essential oils and stress relief, all are potentially beneficial through various methods of application. It is important to consider your smell preference as when we inhale an aroma that we love it will immediately have a positive effect on us. You may experience immediate relief from stress and tension, feel relaxed or energised, emotionally uplifted and calm. They will strengthen your immune system which is often depleted when one is stressed.

Some symptoms of stress can be feeling agitated and annoyed at the simplest or smallest of things. Some may feel teary, angry or impatient. Other symptoms can be broken sleep or feeling tired all the time.

There are many causes of stress - financial or relationship problems, family, work, pressure from many different sources. Here I will offer some recommendations keeping in mind that there are some very common essential oils that are used by Aromatherapists and that each individual may respond differently.

Essential oils to reduce stress:

Bergamot, Black Pepper, Cardamom, Chamomiles, Cedarwood, Clary sage, Cypress, Eucalyptus lemon, Frankincense, Geranium, Ginger, Grapefruit, Jasmine, Juniper, Lavender, Lemon, Lemon myrtle, Mandarin, Neroli, Orange sweet, Patchouli, Peppermint, Rose, Rosemary, Rosewood, Sandalwood, Tea tree lemon, Violet leaf, Ylang Ylang.

I personally recommend and find direct inhalations and/or baths the fastest and most effective way of treating stress, anxiety, tension and depression. Using an aromatherapy body spray is another very effective and pleasing application. Room sprays are another very useful way of using essentials. Essential oil burners and diffusers can be used to enhance your moods however the end result will not be as long lasting as using direct inhalations having a bath or using an aromatherapy body spray.

Here are some examples of blends to use for reducing stress and associated symptoms along with a suitable application method.

Bathing:

Frankincense, Rosewood and Lavender are calming and bring peace.Neroli, Sandalwood and Clary Sage is a wonderful relaxing blend.Bergamot, Vetiver and Sweet Orange is very calming and is uplifting to the emotions.Geranium, Patchouli, Ylang Ylang is balancing and reduces stress and anxiety. For a healthy adult use 6-10 drops in total. For pregnancy, children, the elderly or fragile people halve the amount of essential oil drops. The amount of water has no relevance to the amount of essential oil drops used. When you are bathing you are actually receiving two pathways of absorption via the olfactory (our sense of smell) and integumentary (our skin) systems.

Inhalations:

These can be done by placing a few drops of your desired essential/s oil on to a tissue or hankie inhaling as you need.

Using a disposable inhaler is a very efficient way of doing dry inhalations; otherwise steam inhalations can be used. Be careful with steam inhalations as some essential oils can irritate your mucous membranes. Some essential oils I like to use:

Cardamom, Lemon Myrtle, Sweet Orange and Peru balsam are emotionally invigorating, uplifting, happy oils promoting a sense of lightness of being.

Peppermint, Rose and Lemon, assist in calming a racing mind and assisting with clarity. Bergamot, Mandarin and Grapefruit are uplifting to the emotions.

Body and Room Sprays:

Sprays are fabulous and easy to use on a daily basis and you can carry them with you where ever you go. I recommend you use a coloured or opaque glass bottle, 50-100ml and to carry with you 25-30ml is good. Place purified water in the bottle, around half way, then you add your chosen essential oils. Some aromatherapists prefer to use a disper; however I don't like to add anything but a floral or filtered water or a true hydrosol. Give the bottle a gentle shake before each use.

Suggested blends:

Geranium, Sweet Orange, Bergamot, SandalwoodLemon, Grapefruit, Cardamom, rosewoodRose, Neroli, Champa, Cinnamon30ml bottle 5-30 drops in total50ml bottle 10-30 drops in total100ml bottle 10-50 drops in total

I have given you a guideline in the amount of drops to use above, however it will depend on your personal sense of smell as to how many drops you use.

Enjoy as you bring a smile into your day!

Using Essential Aromatherapy Oils to Boost Your Health

Essential aromatherapy oils have been in use for centuries by millions to improve health conditions.

Many of them will benefit you physically, emotionally and mentally. You can use them to treat problems like headaches, stress and skin diseases and improve the functioning of vital body systems.

How do you use these aromatherapy oils for maximum benefit?

There are many methods of using the oils depending on the condition you are dealing with.

You can inhale them directly either from the bottle or pour a few drops onto a piece of cloth. This way, you will get instant relief from nasal congestion, coughs, colds and flu.

For deep inhalation, you should put a few drops of oil into a basin of hot water and cover your head over the basin to inhale the steam. You can also use the oils as vaporizers or burners to keep the air in your room smelling fresh and clean.

A hot press would work fine, while a cold press will reduce swellings and ease headaches.

Massaging your body with essential aromatherapy oils will not only revitalize your skin but will also treat acne and other skin conditions.

Another beneficial way to use the oils is to add a few drops to your bath water and apply some to your hair.

Lavender oil can be used as a deodorant and decongestant. Inhaling its aroma will lift your moods, relieve you of tension, improve your circulatory system and memory, reduce symptoms of asthma and ease feelings of nausea. Also, it is a good remedy for burns, scratches cuts, muscle pain and joint pain.

Massage lavender oil onto your scalp to address hair loss. It will stimulate your scalp to encourage growth of new hair.

To fight depression, you should use jasmine oil. It has a strong sweet smell which will instantly uplift your spirits and reduce the stress levels in your body. In addition to that, it will improve your heart rate and boost your immune and respiratory systems. Women will experience the benefits of jasmine oil when dealing with menstrual and labor pain.

During labor, inhaling jasmine oil will strengthen your contractions, reduce your pain and increase your energy levels. This will make the delivery process easier and faster. Stretch marks and scars can be an eyesore, but you can reduce their appearance by applying the oil of jasmine to the affected area of your skin. It increases your skins elasticity and encourages the growth of new skin cells.

Make sure to dilute it with a carrier oil of your choice as it may irritate your skin in high concentrations.

Emu oil is another favorable aromatherapy oil.

You will find it pleasant to apply to your skin because of its non-greasy nature. It will penetrate your skin fast to deliver the benefits. Apply it onto your neck to reduce stiffness and pain and massage it onto your skin to refresh it and give it a youthful glow.

It is also effective in healing minor wounds and reducing the appearance of scars. You have many reasons to try Essential Aromatherapy Oils. They will improve the overall state of your health as you enjoy using them.

Essential Oils Uses - How to Mix and Match

Various uses for essential oils are available including aromatherapy and many different around the home. You can add them to your bath water, steam inhalation, hot and cold compresses, blend into face creams, body lotions, use them for hair care, as room fragrances or personal perfumes and much more.Essential oils are the main 'tools of the trade' for aromatherapists, and in their hands they become a powerful, yet subtle instrument of healing. In this context, their most valuable use lies in professional aromatherapy massage treatments. A fascinating aspect of aromatherapy is experiencing the powerful effects they have on people, both psychologically and emotionally. Given that they have a complementary affinity with certain parts of the body, mind and emotions, their benefits are enhanced by choosing appropriate blends. The way you handle and use them is important. Because these oils are powerful and highly concentrated, they can be toxic if used incorrectly, but handled carefully and fallowing a few simple safety tips, they are safe and beneficial.

Being very concentrated and powerful (rarely used undiluted, and in very specific instances) they are greatly diluted before use. Many are light, clear and non-greasy, although a few are viscous and some are coloured. They are also highly volatile and evaporate quickly when exposed to the air, so they are best kept in airtight, dark glass bottles. However, they will not dissolve in water, you can dissolve them in fatty oils, such as almond, sunflower oil or alcohol. In a massage oil, for example, the dilution of essential oil in base oil is around 2 or possibly 3%.

They evaporate as soon as they come into contact with the air so, whichever method of applying is used, a certain amount is always inhaled. Because body massage is the main method of applying them, this suggests that the lungs and the skin are both of prime importance in the way they get into the body and do their work.

There are several ways to use essential oils at home, with or without the specific advice and support of an aromatherapist. As long as you stick to the guidelines and instructions, using them at home can be both fun and rewarding. When there is a physical ailment to be treated, you focus mainly on their physical properties. For example, if you have a sore throat then you would choose one that can fight the bacterial infection, such as lavender, benzoin, thyme or rosewood. On other occasions, they are selected more for their cosmetic skin-care,sedative, stimulating or anti-depressant and uplifting properties.A brief holistic review is always given to the way the essential oils affect you as a whole person, but this is not always the prime consideration.

There are many essential oil uses, such as blending them into your bath water, using them in massage, skin and hair treatment or simply for relaxing. You can take advantage of the essential oils benefits by choosing the appropriate blends.

Aromatherapy Recipes Using Essential Oils

In ancient Egyptian times they used oils from flowers and herbs in their baths and for skin care, not only for their aromas but for the medicinal properties too. These oils are the volatile part of any plant and are extracted in different ways, by distillation, steam or compression. Once you have their oils they can be used individually or mixed together and can be put in the bath for a hot soak, a few drops added to a diffuser so the sweet aromas fill the air or added to a carrier or base oil for a massage. You can even get candles containing these oils or could add net oil to the melted wax as it gathers on the top of a burning candle.

All plants contain essential oils but in different quantities, some more than others. To get just one teaspoon of jasmine oil it takes 40,000 hand- picked jasmine flowers which is why this in one of the more expensive oils to buy. Rose is another flower that does not contain many oils and are usually extracted by using a solvent. The only down side with this method is that is gathers other properties from the plant as well as their oils. These are then known as absolutes and are well known in the fragrance industry and in cosmetics.

Fine essential oils are like diamonds or a fine champagne and known as the soul of any plant. Essential oils all have their own properties and used for different reasons, from rejuvenating, balancing and deep cleansing. They easily absorb in to the skin and can help psychologically and physically. Benefits of aromatherapy oils range from relief of headaches, mood swings, muscle relaxants, blood circulation and other healings.

There are hundreds of essential oils on the market and can be a daunting experience when going out to buy for the first time. Almost anyone can use essential oils but precautions do need to be taken. Because they are very potent it is important to dilute any oil before putting it on the skin and not to put too much in the batch as they can burn. You must ask yourself why you want to use these oils whether it be for a particular ailment and then how you are going to administer, either massage or inhalation so as to get the right ones. Below are a few just to get you started.

Basil - floral sweet aroma used for uplifting, energising and refreshing.

Bergamot - fresh and fruity used for uplifting and inspiring. An excellent deodoriser.

Chamomile - fruity, apple -like used for its calming properties

Clary sage - spicy, hay-like aroma for a euphoric feeling

Eucalyptus - Best known for inhalations and liniments and is very invigourating.

Geranium - A leafy-rose aroma with fruity, minty undertones. A soothing, mood lifting oil.

Grapefruit - This has a bitter citrus aroma which is very refreshing.

Lavender - A fresh almost eucalyptus aroma used in insect repellants, deodorants and room sprays. A calming and purifying influence.

Majarom sweet - Warm and spicy with a hint of nutmeg. Warming and balancing works well on sore muscles.

Orange sweet - Used for its refreshing, uplifting properties.

Rosemary - with its strong fresh, camphor aroma invigourates and clarifies.

Sandalwood - a sweet wood warm aroma. Perfect for that sensual soothing atmosphere

Ylang ylang - an intense floral almost jasmine aroma used for euphoria and sensuality.

Once you get used to the oils and their aromas you can mix your own but be careful with quantities.

Uses of Peppermint Essential Oil

Originally native to the coast of the Mediterranean Sea, peppermint has been used since as far in time as 1.000 BC in Egypt. It's sweet and refreshing scent has made peppermint essential oil a favourite of many aromatherapy producers. If you are looking to calm, refresh and cool down, peppermint oil is one of the best essential oils for skin to use.

Extraction of Peppermint Essential Oil

Peppermint oil comes from the steam distillation of Mentha x piperita, a hybrid mint originated by crossing Mentha aquatic and Mentha spicata. This plant is now cultivated throughout the world, thought originally it was only indigenous to Mediterranean areas. The distilled oil is a clear, clear fluid with a hint of yellow.

Uses of Peppermint Essential Oil

This essential oil can be used as part of a blend of calming oils, perfect to help settle down an upset stomach or even morning sickness during the first stages of pregnancy, provided advice from a doctor is sought first to eliminate any possible underlying affliction causing it. It can also be used successfully to help provide mental stimulation and increase focus, aiding study and mental clarity.

Peppermint oil can also be used to refresh and cool skin, so it's a popular ingredient on lotions, lip balms and products for oily skin, specially when combined with tea tree oil. It can also help reduce the redness and itchiness caused by excessive exposure to the sun. It's an energizing scent that can help excessive fatigue and depression.

Another popular use of peppermint is to help alleviate headaches and even migraines, by rubbing a few diluted drops on the forefront and temples of the afflicted person. It can also help alleviate the symptoms of a cold or chest infection, by helping breathing.

Peppermint also stimulates the digestive system, so a tea made from peppermint leaves can help reduce the consequences of excessive eating such as flatulence, or help colic in children.

Contraindications

As with any other aromatherapy product, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding it's important to consult your doctor first to make sure the use of aromatherapy is not contraindicated. Other afflictions that can be worsened by peppermint essential oil are fever, epilepsy or heart problems.

Peppermint essential oil should never be used undiluted, especially on sensitive skin, and special care should be taken to keep it away from eyes.

Other essential oils for skin that are often used with Peppermint on cosmetic and personal care products are lavender and tea tree oil. Selling aromatherapy products is one of many money making ideas you can do from home to generate a regular income.

Lavender Essential Oil to the Rescue

Whenever I travel I always take an "emergency kit" of essential oils with me. One of the essential oils I find most useful to have on hand is lavender. Thinking back to the times away from home when I've had to use it, many incidents come to mind. The most dramatic was the time in Florida when my husband was checking under the hood of the car and the radiator cap exploded into his face, hitting him on the forehead. The water bubbled up and his entire upper body was scorched.

I immediately doused him with undiluted lavender oil, then applied aloe vera gel, which I also had with me. I kept reapplying the lavender until the soreness subsided and also gave him a couple of Aspirins for the shock. Luckily, we had access to a swimming pool close by, and got there as soon as we could.

My husband stayed neck deep in the pool for about twenty minutes. When he came out, there wasn't a mark on his body except for where the radiator cap had struck his forehead. Our friends who witnessed this said it was a miracle - they had never seen burns heal like this.

One time when I was telling this story, a lady told me that this same type of accident had happened to her husband and he had to spend time in the hospital with third degree burns. Thank goodness for lavender!

Another time lavender came to my rescue was when my son picked me up at the Vancouver airport, saying we'd have to hurry to get to an emergency clinic, as he had just been stung by a bee. He has a history of violent allergic reactions to bee stings; each one getting a little worse. His hand was already swollen to twice its normal size and the swelling was rapidly moving up his arm. Fortunately I was wearing a pendant that contained lavender and I immediately applied it to his bite, stopping the swelling and eliminating the rush. We didn't go to the clinic.

Over the years I have used lavender on numerous people who have had bad reactions to insect bites. It nearly always helps. It is also great for taking the itch out of mosquito bites.

Lavender is also one of my standbys for treating headaches. Just a drop rubbed into the temples and another under the hairline at the back of the neck will usually do the trick.

These are just a few of the many uses I've found for lavender in my travels. Now you know why I wouldn't leave home without it!

Healing Essential Oils and Their Uses

· Body Methods

Use 1 drop of your chosen essential oil on a tissue or hanky and sniff when necessary, this is great when you have a cold and put Eucalyptus on it.

· Inhalation

Add hot water to a bowl, preferably steel or china rather than plastic add 2 or 3 drops of your chosen oil and then cover your head and the bowl with a towel and breathe in the vapours. Keep your eyes closed and have your head about 250cm above the bowl.

· Massage Oil

This is probably the most common way of using the oils. Make up a blend consisting of 50 mls of carrier oil, such as sweet almond oil and add 15 to 30 drops of essential oils to it. You can use 2 or 3 different healing essential oils depending on what you are treating. The benefits of having a massage are enormous; not only does it increase your metabolism but will also assist in relaxing the muscles, helping remove waste from the system, improve circulation, help relieve both mental and physical fatigue, help reduce pain, tension and anxiety and can help improve skin tone.

Healing Essential Oils for the bath

· Bathing with these oils can help both the aches and pains but also relieve any stress of the day, there is a calming and very relaxed feeling during and after a bath that has had essential oils added. If you have a blend then use as directed otherwise use a maximum of 8 drops. Run the bath and then add the oils, keep the door closed so the aromatic smell stays in the room and soak for as long as you can, 10 minutes at least. Relax and breathe in the vapours.

· Shower

Have a shower as usual and after you have rinsed off put your chosen oil/blend onto a face cloth or sponge and rub over your body quite briskly while you stand under the running water, this will not only make your skin feel alive but you get the added benefit of breathing the aromatic smell as well.

· For your hands

Add 2-3 drops of healing essential oil to a basin or bowl of warm water and soak for 10 minutes; you can also do the same for your feet. To help with Athletes foot add 2-3 drops of Tea Tree oil to your foot bath and soak in that for at least 10 minutes.

· Room Sprays

Room sprays are great if you want a natural air freshener, they can also be used when coughs and colds are present. Get a plant sprayer and add 300 mls of warm water, to that add 4 drops of your chosen essential oil and spray as you would normally, be careful not to spray on good wood.

Healing Essential Oils for Children

· Water Bowl

I have always used this method with babies and young children. If they have a blocked nose or cold put boiling water into a bowl and add 2-3 drops of Eucalyptus essential oil to this, then place at the head of the cot/bed for toddlers and in the middle for babies. The aromatic steam will help to clear the airways and give the child a better sleep. If you are doing this at night the bowl can stay there for the night.

You can also use the water bowl method for any room in the house, maybe you just want to have a refreshing, or relaxing feeling room, shut the windows and doors and allow the aroma to fill the room, give it at least 5 minutes.

These are just some of the ways you can use healing essential oils to help with healing and relaxation, their uses and benefits are many and when you learn how to use them you will find what fits best for you.
